Lady Elliot Island is the southernmost island of the Great Barrier Reef off the Eastern coast of Australia. The island lies 46 nautical miles (85 km; 53 mi) north-east of Bundaberg and covers an area of approximately 45 hectares (110 acres).
The island is home to a small eco resort and an airstrip.
Lady Elliot Island is located within the ‘Green Zone’ of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which is the most protective classification designated by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
The island is particularly known for its exceptional scuba diving and snorkeling, as its location far offshore at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef results in excellent water clarity.
The eco resort on the island is Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort, which is a 41-room hotel which adheres strongly to eco principals.
Michael Turtle of Time Travel Turtle has written a great article about the island and the resort, including descriptions of the various ways in which the hotel is making itself eco friendly.
